Save children’s heart unit Leicester

Mr S Chauhan spoke to Sabras Radio about the petition to save the children’s heart unit at Glenfield Hospital (

NHS England proposals could mean that children’s heart surgery is no longer carried out at the hospital, meaning that patients in the East Midlands would need to travel further afield for operations.

Message from Mr Suresh Chauhan:

I am a member of the Campaign committee opposing the planned closure of our excellent Children’s Heart Unit at Glen-field Hospital.

This unit has 3 surgeons and between them, are carrying out just under 370 operations annually, at the moment. The rough target set by NHS England is 375 and by 2019, there should be 4 surgeons, carrying out 500 operations between them. To that end, we have just appointed a 4th surgeon.

So, by any reasonable yardstick, we are meeting and will meet all the normal targets set by NHS England. However, closure of this excellent unit will mean that parents with tragically sick children will have to travel as far afield as London/Birmingham for urgent treatments. This is neither fair or justified.

Closure will also have significant adverse knock-on effects on other associated services.

Our campaign, working closely with the Management of Glen-field Hospital has included
Organising a demonstration last year when over 1500 local people took part
We raised a petition against closure and as of yesterday, we have collected over 125,000 signatures.

For 11th February 2017, we have planned another demonstration, Marching from Victoria Park at 12. Noon and arriving at the Jubilee Square at about 1pm, where there will be a few speeches. There will be a steel band playing at Victoria Park and a team of Bhangra dancers will accompany the march

I would like to encourage as many of your listeners as possible to attend this demonstration and so, would welcome an interview to do this.
