His Excellency John Tembo Jnr, Deputy High Commissioner, Malawi High Commission, his wife Mrs Mapitso Tembo and Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP were amongst prominent dignitaries that launched the Malawi Relief Effort on Sabras Radio, on behalf of the Malawi Asian Organisation (MAO) UK.

The live event was held at Sabras Radio’s studios to help raise funds for the catastrophic floods that are affecting people in Malawi. As part of the launch, Sabras Radio’s Managing Director Don Kotak donated a generous £501, while Vaz donated £101 whilst urging listeners to donate money.

Talking to Sabras Radio at the launch, MAO UK Chairman, Mr. YD Pandriker said, “The aim of MAO UK is to rebuild homes and if we reach our target, we would like to do this in all 15 districts affected. Every penny we receive will be used building houses in the villages.”

Mr. SJ Osman, Secretary, MOA UK said, “The situation in Malawi is extremely dire, over 600,000 people displaced and number of schools are being used as shelters, that means children are not being able to go to school. We also heard recently that there’s been a Cholera outbreak in Malawi – this is further worsening the situation there. Malawi is the tenth poorest country in the world. We hope the people of Leicester will respond generously in helping Malawi in the
time of need.”

His Excellency John Tembo Jnr, Deputy High Commissioner, Malawi High Commission, said, “First of all let me thank the management of Sabras Radio for partnering up with MAO in launching this appeal…We received £4 million from the British government.. This initiative is well received, it’s actually a positive response by the president and people of Malawi because we need that assistance.”

Adding to the appeal, Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP said, “Thank you for inviting me. I’m delighted to be here. This is a very important date and this campaign is extremely important. I want to first of all pay tribute to Don Kotak and Sabras Radio for allowing the Malawi Asian community to have the platform in order to raise awareness of the plight that it’s facing the people of Malawi.

Delighted to see Mr Tembo here from the Malawi High Commission and the other dignitaries. So all we ask from the people of Leicester today is to give whatever they can.

Sabras has a long and impressive highlight of causes…I would like to begin by making a small contribution of £101 to start this appeal. I would like to extend to the Deputy High Commissioner and the whole Malawi community in Leicester, when you have collected the money, please come down to London and I’ll welcome you in parliament and I think parliament will host the final fundraising event.”

Malawi Asian Organisation thanked Sabras Radio and the dignitaries for making the launch a success. Other prominent personalities included Leicester Councillor Hanif Aqbany, Councillor Ted Cassidy MBE and Councilor Vi Dempster.

MAO UK representatives present on the day included MAO UK Chairman Sony Pandriker, MAO UK Secretary, Soli Osman, MAO UK Treaurer, Harish Thakrar and MAO UK Committee Member, Nazir Okhai (Ace Properies).
