Leicester MP, Keith Vaz has blasted plans to close down the Merlyn Vaz Health & Social Care Centre after Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) decided against renewing the contract.

Talking to the Leicester Mercury, Vaz said he was started a petition to oppose the move, “We need to provide better services at a local level. Walk in centres are the spokes to the hub of A&E. Millions of pounds have been spent to provide walk in facilities at the Merlyn Vaz Centre, and we are now faced with the prospect of these being taken away. This would be the wrong decision. We need more community health centres not less.”

Professor Azhar Farooqi, chairman of the CCG, said, “Wherever located, the hub will continue to offer patients extended access to GP services 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, coupled with an increased range of diagnostic services.”
